Growing up in the village as a girl can be daunting especially because in most cultures, home tasks tend to be quite gender inclined. However, growing up as a first born and a girl, my parents shielded me from tasks that would distract me from my studies.
My dad would take up some of the house chores so I could have time to focus on my studies. My parents encouraged us to dream and be all that we can be in life, our gender notwithstanding.
Looking back, I now realize my dad was literally breaking the bias. This year, on IWD, my dad is my hero. I celebrate him.
